Bosch: Legacy star Titus Welliver breaks down the big conversation between Harry Bosch and Maddie in season 3. Throughout the run of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, the titular detective has gone to great lengths to keep his daughter safe, but the nature of their world means that this is more complicated. At the end of Legacy season 1, Maddie was kidnapped by Kurt Dockweiler, a murderer and serial rapist known as the Screen Cutter. When Dockweiler later ends up dead, Maddie suspects her father’s involvement, leading to an emotional conversation between the two.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, Welliver breaks down season 3’s conversation between the two, calling it some of the highest stakes ever. He goes on to talk about how past events have impacted their relationship, and how her kidnapping by Dockweiler, and his subsequent death, has led to tension between the two. Welliver details how their interaction surrounding the death of Dockweiler, as well as Bosch’s experience in the war in Afghanistan, raises a lot of questions in her mind. Check out Welliver’s comments below:

Maybe some of the highest stakes we’ve ever seen, with the exception of when Maddie was abducted by Dockweiler. We saw Harry come right to the edge. And obviously, that gets addressed as he’s under investigation for the whole killing of Dockweiler. And we saw in the previous season, where he goes into the interrogation room, and Maddie asks him [if he did it], and he says, “Would I if I could have? Yeah.”

He’s honest in that moment. That’s probably the most transparent that we’ve ever seen Harry. He answers that question very directly, which doesn’t necessarily offer Maddie much comfort. She understands it intellectually, but with all the other things that are swirling around in her mind, and also the story that she’s heard about Harry’s experience in war in Afghanistan, it raises a lot of questions.

What This Means For Bosch: Legacy’s Conclusion

Bosch & Maddie’s Relationship Feels Like It Will Stay Complicated

The relationship between Bosch and his daughter has been central to both Bosch: Legacy, and the original show, and has always provided moments of drama and pathos. Both shows have done a fine job showing how things between the pair have become strained, and though they love one another, there is tension in their interactions. Bosch is conflicted by the fact that Maddie has grown from a protected young girl into an adult with a strong interest in police work, following in her father’s footsteps, and being inspired by him to pursue a career in policing.

There might have been a resolution of sorts, but there are still a lot of questions Maddie has about what her father has done, and she may never get answers.

With Bosch: Legacy coming to an end, there is still a lot of Bosch and Maddie’s relationship that needs to be explored, but these are conversations that might never happen. However, with the upcoming spinoff show Ballard, there is the chance that both characters could continue their story. Bosch’s involvement is confirmed, and it could be that Maddie makes an appearance later as well. This would provide the opportunity for the two characters to carry on their story from Bosch: Legacy, and have more emotionally-charged interactions.
