The following contains spoilers for Sinners, now playing in theaters

Sinners has the perfect set-up for a sequel set in the 1990s, but Ryan Coogler doesn’t seem to want to make a sequel to the film. After the massive success of Creed and Black Panther, Ryan Coogler has moved into an original space for his latest film. The period-piece vampire film is a lot of fun, a cool and thoughful exploration of social conflict bolstered by terrific music and great performances.

Sinners‘ ending is fairly conclusive with the main characters, but it leaves the introduced world open for plenty of further exploration, especially after one of the big reveals from Sinners‘ post-credits scenes. While Coogler’s public statements suggest there aren’t any plans to continue the characters beyond this film, there’s still plenty of potential in a follow-up to the vampire film. It could even be the perfect set-up for a cross-country romance that shifts the focus to two of Sinners‘ most engaging characters.

Stack & Mary’s Survival In Sinners’ Ending Sets Up A Sequel Set In The ’90s

Stack And Mary Could Drive Their Own Sinners Sequel In Different Eras Of American History

The ending of Sinners would reveal that Stack and Mary are still alive and thriving decades after the events of Sinners, setting up a pretty great potential sequel about their adventures across half a century of American history. Stack and Mary are among the many people turned into vampires during the events of Sinners, which almost the entire cast either being infected by the curse or killed before it can take hold. However, while most of the vampires were killed in the aftermath of Remmick being staked by Smoke, Stack and Mary actually escaped the chaos alive.

The first post-credits scene of Sinners confirms that both of them survived for decades and are still in pretty good condition. They’ve also adjusted well to the times, with appropriate fashion and tastes as they visit an aged Sammie in Chicago in 1992. This suggests that the pair have spent the intervening years together, potentially ruling Chicago from the shadows or exploring the nation at large. They’re still clearly a couple, giving the gleefully vicious vampires a clear emotional connection. A sequel about their relationship would be fascinating, especially with how they’ve adjusted to the times.

Stack and Mary are two of the most compelling characters in Sinners, which is impressive given the depth of the cast. Their external bravado and confidence makes them fun to watch interacting with and intimidating other characters, but their undeniable chemistry and love for one another bring out a more vulnerable side of them. It’d be fun to watch the pair deploy their swagger across different periods in American history, with a prospective sequel potentially having the freedom to play with historical events like a cool vampiric riff on Forrest Gump.

It’d be a clever way to let Coogler bring back two of Sinners‘ coolest characters and give them an emotional arc together while charting how they made it from Mississippi in 1932 to Chicago in 1992.

Notably, Stack and Mary weren’t shown escaping together in the reveal of their survival. It’s possible the two weren’t initially together, prompting them to go through some sort of adventure to be reunited. This could give a prospective sequel a surprisingly romantic angle to play with, especially if it explored concepts like Mary’s unseen husband that Stack was suggested to have pushed her towards. It’d be a clever way to let Coogler bring back two of Sinners‘ coolest characters and give them an emotional arc together while charting how they made it from Mississippi in 1932 to Chicago in 1992.

Could There Be A Sinners 2? What Ryan Coogler Has Said

Ryan Coogler Designed Sinners To Be A Self-Contained Film

Sinners 2 has a great amount of potential, but Ryan Coogler has claimed he’s not really thinking about a follow-up to the film. During an interview with Ebony ahead of the film’s release, Coogler explained that the film was designed as a singular story with a conclusive ending. Coogler told the publication that “I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that… I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing.” That makes sense given the conclusive nature of Sinners‘ story and the arc surrounding Smoke and Sammie.

Early reviews are in for Ryan Coogler’s latest collaboration with Michael B. Jordan, and so far it’s being labeled a bloody, sexy must-see movie.

On top of that, Sinners is the rare movie where the filmmaker was able to negotiate a certain amount of creative control over the future of the property. This means even if Warner Bros. wanted to produce a follow-up, they would need Coogler to be involved. With that in mind, it doesn’t seem that a sequel to Sinners is in the works. That doesn’t mean things couldn’t change, especially after audiences get a taste of Stack and Mary. While Coogler might not want to make it right now, fans of Sinners can keep their fingers crossed that he changes his mind.
