Sigourney Weaver may have gotten her sci-fi start in Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise, and while she’ll always be inseparable from her role as Ellen Ripley, she’s recently become one of the titans of a new universe. Weaver is one of the stars of the Avatar franchise, which kicked off in 2009 with Avatar and continued more than 10 years later with Avatar: The Way of Water. The story of Pandora will roll on later this year in Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will introduce the world to a darker side of Pandora, much less colorful than the parts of the planet inhabited by the Omatikaya and Metkayina. During a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at Star Wars Celebration to talk about The Mandalorian and Grogu, Weaver provided an update on the next Avatar film, including when she thinks she’ll get to see it:

“Jim [Cameron] is anxious to show us a section or two. He’s very excited about it, but he’s in New Zealand, still editing, so we have to wait, I think, until July, when he comes back to see it. But he’s very excited about it, which of course makes us very excited about it.

The first Avatar movie from James Cameron lit the world on fire in 2009 on its way to passing Titanic to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. While Avengers: Endgame took the crown for a couple of years, Avatar was re-released in theaters in the lead up to its sequel, which helped it regain the top spot. Avatar: The Way of Water continued the franchise’s box office success on its way to earning over $2.3 billion at the box office to make it the third-highest-grossing movie ever, behind only Avatar and Endgame. The first film sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) learn to live with and become one of the Na’vi, and the sequel follows him as he ventures into uncharted waters to protect his family.

How Many More ‘Avatar’ Movies Are Coming?

Two more Avatar movies are coming after Avatar: Fire and Ash, which are scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031. While the 2029 date is easily attainable, the 2031 date for Avatar 5 could end up being pushed back to 2032 or 2033. Plot details about future installments are being kept under wraps, but we do know that Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh will join the world of Pandora for the first time in Avatar 4. Fans can also expect the settings to vary — after moving from the jungle to the ocean and now dealing with fire, only time will tell what James Cameron has in store for the final two Avatar movies.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in theaters on December 19. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the film and more news out of Star Wars Celebration. You can watch the first two Avatar movies on Disney+.
