Netflix’s newly released western romance series Ransom Canyon gets a hopeful response from its creator when asked about a possible season 2. Based on Jodi Thomas’ series of books, the show is set in a fictional Texas town, where passions between three ranching dynasties run deep. Ransom Canyon‘s cast includes Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, and Lizzy Greene, with April Blair showrunning the Western adaptation, and the show currently sitting at a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and a 76% from viewers.

Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Ransom Canyon series creator Blair gave a hopeful response when asked about season 2. After discussing its ending, Blair said that she hopes its audience is yearning for a second season just as much as she is. She added that her favorite feeling is “when a show ends, and you don’t want it to end, and you just want more” and hopes that viewers feel the same way when the credits of season 1 end. Read her full statement below:

My favorite feeling is when a show ends, and you don’t want it to end, and you just want more. It makes you feel warm and familiar, and you don’t want to let go. That is how I hope people feel. It’s how I feel about the show watching it.

What This Means For Ransom Canyon’s Future

If Its Commercial Performance Holds, It Might Get A Second Season

While Ransom Canyon’s critical reception isn’t groundbreaking, it has several things working in its favor when regarding future seasons. Its blend of Western and romance genres, with the former having a strong resurgence in popularity and demand from modern audiences and the longing for the latter never fading, gives Netflix’s romantic western series Ransom Canyon a leg up over many other series in the streaming landscape that subscribers often feel is overstuffed.

Netflix Just Released An Addictive New Contemporary Western Series & It’s Already Better Than Yellowstone Season 1

Netflix’s new Western series Ransom Canyon is already drawing comparisons to Yellowstone, with some viewers calling it even better than season 1.

At the time of writing, Ransom Canyon is also No. 1 on Netflix’s Top TV Shows in the U.S. Today. The question is how long the new series will stay on that list and how long it will stay relevant and watched by new viewers. While its lukewarm reviews on RT don’t really help, its possibly already-established fanbase from Thomas’ books and Duhamel’s star power might be enough to draw more viewers in to boost its viewership and justify Ransom Canyon season 2.

Our Take On April Blair’s Hopes For Ransom Canyon Season 2

A Season 2 Might Be Warranted

Yancy Grey played by Jack Schumacher in Ransom Canyon

While I don’t care much for the critiques of Ransom Canyon being derivative, I can see how some of its genre blending, especially its abrupt switching to a crime thriller, at times, can be a jarring experience for some viewers. This, along with its sometimes underdeveloped arcs, while the characters and chemistry are often engaging, could prevent the series from getting a season 2. Ultimately, though, more of Ransom Canyon, given the demand for more romantic Westerns, the series’ often fascinating characters, and its justifiable comparisons to other TV Westerns like Yellowstone, wouldn’t be too surprising.
