Abbott Elementary is so not done with crossover episodes, but who will our favorite educationists cross paths with next? The bingeworthy sitcom last had a crossover event with FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is actually split into two parts. The first aired on January 8 as the ninth episode of Season 4, setting an impressive record for the show, while the second is coming up in a few months, as confirmed recently. However, while we hold our breath till then, showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker have teased a possible crossover with another similarly successful Philly-set show, The Pitt.

Breaking down the Abbott Elementary Season 4 finale with The Wrap, Halpern and Schumacker shared their thoughts about the show’s future, including a prospective crossover that’s already in discussion. Nothing concrete has been set in motion yet, but Schumacker mentioned a little detail about the possibility with The Pitt, urging fans to never say never:

“In terms of another crossover, we haven’t talked about anything in earnest. That was a process of making that one happen, and so [we’re] definitely open to it, not necessarily be like chomping at the bit, because we’re tired, but we will be reinvigorated in like a month when the writers’ room starts back up and who knows? We shoot right across the street from The Pitt.”

Set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, The Pitt is a critically acclaimed medical drama series, led by Noah Wyle, who’s also a co-executive producer. It follows emergency department staff as they attempt to overcome the hardships of a single 15-hour work shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, all while having to navigate staff shortages, underfunding, and insufficient resources. Ahead of the final episode of Season 1, the show was renewed for a second season, scheduled to premiere in January 2026. On the other hand, Abbott Elementary will return with Season 5 this fall, hopefully with another exciting crossover, even more so than It’s Always Sunny’s.

How Did ‘Abbott Elementary’s First Crossover Happen?

About twenty-four hours ago, more details about Abbott and It’s Always Sunny’s second crossover were unveiled, particularly when it will air. This special, which will be the first episode in Season 17 of the Rob McElhenney-starring sitcom, will arrive on July 9 on FXX, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day. Viewers should expect something entirely different in this crossover event compared to the “Volunteers” episode of Abbott Elementary, which co-showrunner Schumacker admittedly never believed would become a reality. Opening up about it, he said:

“Never doubt Quinta [Brunson’s] ability to, by sheer force of will, just make something happen. [I remember] thinking, ‘that’s never gonna happen in a million years.’ and then, through a little bit of luck and a lot of just sheer force of will on both sides with Rob [McElhenney] and Charlie [Day] and Glenn [Howerton] and everybody — they just made it happen. We’re a co-production with Warner Brothers and 20th and ‘Sunny’ is obviously part of the Disney family, so that helped ease it a little bit too. Sometimes corporate synergy leads to good things.”

Expect another Abbott x It’s Always Sunny crossover this summer, and stay tuned to Collider for future details of more crossovers to come.
