This 1995 Alternative Album Is Chappel Roan’s Gay Awakening

Chappell Roan is known for expressing her queer experience through her lyrics. She’s never afraid to speak her mind and express her thoughts publicly, whether it be regarding her mental health or other important matters. So, when asked about the record that shaped her queer identity, the “Good Luck, Babe!” hitmaker answers without hesitation. According to the Grammy winner, fellow Grammy-winning artist Alanis Morissette (specifically her acclaimed 1995 record) has amplified her queerness even further.
In her guest appearance on the TikTok series Gaydar (via Billboard), Roan answered a rather straightforward question asked by host Anania: “What album made you gay?” Without giving it a second thought, the singer revealed, “I would say Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morissette.” She then proceeds to sing a portion of the song off the 1995 album, “You Oughta Know,” before she cuts herself off for apparently imitating Morissette’s singing style in an “offensive” manner.
The alternative rock album marked Morissette’s foray into a different sound, veering away from her pop-rich first two albums. The album received critical acclaim upon its release and definitely catapulted the singer’s career to greater heights. Some of the singles on the album include “Hand in My Pocket,” “Head over Feet,” and “Ironic.”
Chappell Roan Is Your “Favorite Artist’s Favorite Artist”
In the same interview, the “Pink Pony Club” singer also answered Sasha Colby (RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15) when asked, “What is a drag mother and who is yours?” The singer, whose camp aesthetic is heavily inspired by drag, has also been open about her admiration for the Drag Race winner. She also references one of Colby’s catchphrases, “I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen,” and changed it to “I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist” during her Coachella 2024 performance. She then revealed her “Gay Music Video Holy Trinity,” which includes Lady Gaga‘s “Alejandro,” Shakira‘s “She Wolf,” and Beyoncé and Shakira’s “Beautiful Liar.”
Roan released her debut EP, School Night, in 2017, and has experienced whirlwind success with the release of her 2024 single “Good Luck, Babe!” in 2024. The song introduced her 2023 debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, to a much wider audience. Some of her best tracks include “Red Wine Supernova,” “After Midnight,” “Casual,” “Hot to Go!,” “Femininomenon,” “My Kink Is Karma,” “Naked in Manhattan,” and more. She also recently released her single “The Giver” on March 13.
