Here’s why Pedro Pascal’s Joel is leaving The Last of Us Season 2
Pedro Pascal’s Joel is leaving The Last of Us Season 2 as his character was killed in the series.
Season 2 episode titled “Through the Valley” witnessed the tragic death of Pascal’s character, Joel Miller. The new character, named Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, decided to kill Joel to take revenge for her father’s death. Previously, Joel had killed Abby’s father to protect Ellie. While Joel turned savior for Abby this time, she was burning with revenge and ended up stabbing him in his neck. Soon, Joel succumbed to his wounds and passed away in front of Ellie, leaving her heartbroken.
The character’s brutal murder has made way for Pascal’s exit from The Last of Us. While fans were heartbroken with the lead character’s departure, the show is doing justice to its source material. For the unversed, The Last of Us series is loosely based on Naughty Dog’s video game franchise. It follows the uproar of zombie-like creatures following a mass fungal infection in the futuristic world. In the game, Joel was killed pretty quickly.
As such, the show kept up with the video game by killing off Joel Miller in the second season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pascal opened up on the end of his character in the show. He stated, “It was always an understanding that it would stay true to the source material in a specific way and that the, let’s say, practical and exclusive obligation would be for season 1. It was just a matter of how and when.”
While Pascal’s character has come to an end, The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin made an interesting revelation on Josh Horowitz’s podcast. He confirmed that Joel’s presence will loom over the show throughout Season 2. As a result, fans are expecting the character to make flashback appearances in the upcoming episodes.
