David Hyde Pierce and Brian Hargrove first met each other in 1982. In a 2022 interview with People, Pierce revealed that they started off as just friends and had no idea that the other person was gay. “When Brian and I were first together, we were actors, we had the same agents, and we just ran into each other at auditions. We liked each other. We did not know at that time that either one of us was gay, and we just hung out as best friends. That went on for many months. Eventually, we figured it out,” explained Pierce.

After years of dating, the couple finally tied the knot on October 24, 2008, in California. The wedding took place just a few days before the approval of Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriage in the state. Prop 8 was formally repealed in 2024. The couple has been together for almost four decades.
