A new MCU theory suggests the perfect storyline for a possible Thor 5 that could bring Chris Hemsworth’s story as the God of Thunder to a dramatic end. Marvel Studios hasn’t yet confirmed the development of another Thor movie in the MCU, but after Thor: Love and Thunder was met with widespread criticism, Chris Hemsworth’s iconic character needs redemption. Hemsworth has been announced to be returning in Avengers: Doomsday, and will likely star in Avengers: Secret Wars, too, but it could be Thor 5 that truly wraps up his story.

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has been a staple of the MCU since his debut back in his eponymous 2011 Phase 1 movie, and he is currently the only main superhero to embark on adventures in four solo movies. Unfortunately, Marvel Studios has repeatedly failed to pinpoint exactly what works for Thor, which means he’s been a Shakespearean, classic hero, a stoic and brooding Avenger, a comedic but troubled gladiator and an overly-humorous father. After Doomsday and Secret Wars, Thor 5 has the chance to finally get the God of Thunder right.

Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Can Set Up Thor’s Death In Thor 5

Chris Hemsworth Has Been Confirmed To Be Returning To The MCU At Least Once More

During Marvel’s lengthy chair-laying ceremony at the end of March, Chris Hemsworth was the first actor confirmed to be cast in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo brothers’ 2026 crossover movie will mark Hemsworth’s first appearance in the MCU since 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which ended with Thor gaining an adoptive daughter and seemingly embarking on new solo adventures across the universe. It’s unclear what will bring him back to Earth, but it will be fantastic to see him reunite with the Avengers to battle Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

While Chris Hemsworth’s return to the MCU is very exciting, there has been speculation that the God of Thunder might not be kept in the franchise for too much longer. Personal developments in Hemsworth’s life and the fluctuating popularity of Thor in the MCU have spurred theories that Thor 5 could be the Asgardian hero’s final adventure. Doomsday and Secret Wars could begin to plant the seeds for Thor to exit the MCU, and a new theory suggests the perfect storyline that could start to bring Thor’s MCU story to an emotional and intense ending.

Thor’s Death Reunites Him With His Best MCU Supporting Characters In New Thor 5 Theory

Thor Could Find Himself In Valhalla In Thor 5’s Opening Moments

Perhaps mirroring Loki’s shocking death at the hands of the Mad Titan, Thanos, in the opening moments of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, a new theory posed by Reddit user Party_Attitude8754 suggests that Thor 5 could begin with the God of Thunder’s demise. This would be an incredible surprise for the as-yet-unannounced MCU sequel which would remove Chris Hemsworth’s Thor from the MCU in one of the franchise’s biggest twists. This doesn’t need to be the end of Thor’s story, however, as Thor 5 could then bring the God of Thunder to the Asgardian afterlife of Valhalla.

We first saw Valhalla in the post-credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder, which saw Idris Elba’s Heimdall welcome Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster into Valhalla after she died in battle against Christian Bale’s terrifying Gorr the God Butcher as the Mighty Thor. Perhaps a battle between Thor and Hercules could end with the former’s death and being welcomed into Valhalla, where he could reunite with some of his best supporting characters, including Foster, Heimdall, the Warriors Three and perhaps even Odin, Frigga and the original Loki. This could see Thor embark on an entirely new adventure to save Valhalla.

Why Exploring Valhalla Would Be Great For Thor 5 After Love & Thunder

Valhalla Has Only Been Teased In The MCU

Valhalla is a completely unexplored corner of the MCU’s Asgardian stories, so it would be fantastic to see it given more attention and focus in a possible Thor 5. The Reddit theory suggests this could feature Thor fighting alongside his long-lost friends and family to save Valhalla from a villain who poses a danger to the Asgardian afterlife. There are some formidable threats in Marvel Comics that could easily fill this role, such as the Midgard Serpent, the Black Winter or the Chaos King, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, any of whom could become Thor’s most dangerous antagonist yet.

Though Thor has already faced some worthy adversaries in the MCU, the God of Thunder still has some powerful enemies who are yet to appear.

Asgard was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel has also explored the likes of Jotunheim and Svartalfheim, while Earth has also been a prominent location for Thor in the MCU. It would be great to see a new corner of Marvel’s Asgardian lore being explored in a new Thor movie, and Valhalla contains some of the most powerful and iconic Asgardian heroes in the MCU, so there are hopes they’ll return. This could make Thor’s last MCU project a final farewell and a love letter to his entire MCU history, which would make the possible upcoming movie even more emotional.

Thor 5 Theory Creates The Opportunity For 1 New MCU Character To Become A Bona Fide Hero

Chris Hemsworth’s Departure Would Allow A New Hero To Replace Him

Eternity becoming Gorr's daughter Love in Thor Love and Thunder

While it would be amazing to see Thor enter Valhalla, reunite with his friends and family and fight to save the Asgardian afterlife, this would leave a major loose end on Earth. Thor adopted Gorr’s resurrected daughter, Love, at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, and has been raising her as his own. Played by India Hemsworth, Chris Hemsworth’s own daughter, Love has the powers of the cosmic entity Eternity, which makes her one of the MCU’s most powerful new characters. Although surely traumatic, her adoptive father’s death could be great for Love.

It might be hard for Love to grow and develop as a hero in her own right under Thor’s shadow, so his death in the opening moments of Thor 5 could give her the chance to become more of an individual character with her own personality. Love’s powers have not really been explored, but she is surely powerful enough to replace Thor if Chris Hemsworth does actually depart from the MCU. While we wait for confirmation of Thor 5 actually being developed, this theory certainly poses a strong idea for a narrative for the unannounced but hoped-for sequel.
