Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For April 24, 2025 (Puzzle #683)

The last throes of winter define the themes of today’s challenging Connections puzzle, with a ton of similar concepts that are hard to pair into groups. I found today’s categories to be quite hard to find, especially since many of the words available were frustratingly similar. However, with the right clues, you can narrow down the context used for today’s puzzle to find multiple solutions.
Similar to the NYT Letter Boxed game, today’s Connections puzzle asks you to find patterns that are hard to see at first. From the beginning of today’s puzzle, you’ll see phrases that are all close to one another through their various definitions. Since you only have four chances to make mistakes, it can be hard to find the right words to create a group when so many are already alike.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
April 24 #683
I managed to solve today’s puzzle by trying to visualize the various definitions of each word I came across. For example, for ICEBERG, I imagined the physical frozen objects often found in cold waters, but I also remembered that it is a type of lettuce I could see myself putting into a salad. Both definitions carry a new context, opening up new possibilities for category groups to make more sense.
To help you search for the right definitions of available words, here are some great hints about each of today’s puzzle categories:
- One category is about things that stand out due to their absence of color.
- One category is about things related to alternate kinds of the same plant you would put in a salad.
- One category is about things describing characters you would see fight The Dark Knight in comic books.
- One category is about things that have both literal and metaphorical ways of listening.

BABY POWDER |
MILK |
POLAR BEAR |
SNOW |
I quickly caught on to this portion of the puzzle, mainly due to how BABY POWDER and MILK already pair together well. This initial connection made me think that this portion of the puzzle has to do with the appearance of its phrases rather than their functions. This led me to include SNOW and MILK, with the former being the hardest to add due to how it could also work with many other words in today’s puzzle.

BUTTER |
ICEBERG |
LEAF |
ROMAINE |
This was the most challenging part of the puzzle, in my opinion, as I had to look up ROMAINE first as a type of lettuce. LEAF is simple enough to include, but ICEBERG should be used to refer to iceberg lettuce, not an aspect of winter with SNOW or POLAR BEAR. Once I realized this, I was able to look up BUTTER as butterhead lettuce, completing this section of the puzzle by including that word.

BANE |
JOKER |
PENGUIN |
SCARECROW |
This part of the puzzle was tricky for me at first, as I imagined PENGUIN to connect more to SNOW, POLAR BEAR, and ICEBERG from other categories. However, what tipped me off to the Batman connection was the inclusion of JOKER and SCARECROW, who only pair with each other as villains of The Dark Knight. This helped me separate PENGUIN from other sections and add BANE to put together part of Batman’s rogues’ gallery.

CORNFIELD |
MUSICIANS |
PITCHERS |
WALLS |
This part of the puzzle is definitely the most challenging, as each of these words has seemingly no connection whatsoever at first. That being said, I thought about how ears of corn are harvested as crops from a CORNFIELD, which gave me the right idea. Thinking about phrases like “the walls have ears” helped me to include WALLS, then PITCHERS, and MUSICIANS for more literal definitions tied to this category.
