Final Destination Bloodlines Features Unexpected Opening Sequence, Says Directors

Final Destination Bloodlines will feature an opening sequence that differs from the traditional model that the franchise has followed previously, says the film’s directors.
What happens in the Final Destination Bloodlines opening sequence?
Speaking to SFX magazine for its latest issue this month, co-director Zach Lipovsky opened up about the film’s opening, which he says will throw audiences for a loop. Traditionally, Final Destination films have opened with a long premonition sequence had by one of the main characters in the movie.
Unlike past years, though, Lipovsky says that the premonition scene in Bloodlines will take place in the past, in 1969. After that, the co-director says, the story will move forward to modern day. The change is something that Lipovsky and co-director Adam Stein hope will capture the audience’s attention right away.
“For this film, the first premonition takes place in 1969,” Lipovsky said. “There are lots of deaths during the premonition, which is what normally happens in the opening sequence of a Final Destination movie, but we then come out of the eye of a different person in the modern day. That’s new. For a lot of fans, I think that’s going to immediately throw them for a loop. It’s going to make them lean forward to try and figure out what’s going on.”
Ultimately, Lipovsky says their goal is to keep audience’s guessing even in a movie like Final Destination. For him, he wants to switch a lot of the film’s predictability.
“As moviegoers, we love it when you have to lean forward in your seat because a movie is being unpredictable. We switch up a lot of the predictability, including who’s going to die next and how they are going to die,” said Lipovsky. “You might think it’s one person, but it’s not. There’s a delight in that.”
Final Destination Bloodlines is out in theaters on May 16, 2025.
