‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Is Officially in Production as Work On the Battle of the Gullet Is Underway in New Image

House of the Dragon returned us to Westeros after a controversial ending brought the curtain down on Game of Thrones Season 8 and the reign of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). However, the way Season 2 of the prequel series ended left a decent section of its fanbase demanding more. As many expected to see the famous Battle of the Gullet play out before the season bade farewell. The show’s coming season will bring the famed naval battle on-screen in all its brutish glory. Abubakar Salim, who plays Alyn of Hull, one of the bastard sons of Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), took to social media to offer the first look at the battle to come. Salim’s post is simple and captures a close-up of a well-crafted armor from House Velaryon with the sigil of Lord Corlys, a silver seahorse, emblazoned on the breastplate.
The tussle between Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her half-brother, King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), over who gets to sit on the Iron Throne and reign over Westeros has been fierce and bloody. The conflict has cost Rhaenyra her young son, Prince Lucerys, who is (accidentally) killed by Aegon’s brother, Aemond, and his dragon Vhagar in Season 1. By the time Season 2 had ended, Lord Corlys had to deal with the tragic news that his wife, Rhaenys Targaryen, and her dragon, Meleys, were felled by Aemond and Vhagar. Now, after nursing his wounds and rebuilding his navy, Corlys is poised to meet Aegon’s naval forces in the Gullet, a strategic portion of the sea in the Crownlands that offers important trade to King’s Landing. The Battle of the Gullet is coming, and Corlys will seek his vengeance.
‘House of the Dragon’s Battle of the Gullet — A Naval Battle for the Ages
The Battle of Rook’s Rest was the only major battle in the second season of House of the Dragon, and while Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) undoubtedly left his mark on the conflict and the war in general, one Targaryen in particular was missing. Aemond’s uncle, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), remained in Harrenhal for much of Season 2, having visions and raising an army in support of his wife, Queen Rhaenyra. However, that will change in Season 3 and the legendary Battle of the Gullet when Aemond and Daemon clash in one of the most epic conflicts ever seen in Westeros.
House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones are both based on the written works of George R.R. Martin. Martin’s books contain within their pages many epic battles, with some of them making it on-screen. With Rook’s Rest in the prequel series and the Battle of the Bastards, from the original series, Westeros always delivers. So, when will the Battle of the Gullet throw down and what might we expect? Showrunner Ryan Condal, in a previous interview with Collider, teased:
“We also wanted to build some anticipation toward it. I know everybody wants this to come out every summer. It’s just that the show is so complex that we’re really making multiple feature films every season. So I apologize for the wait, but I will just say if Rook’s Rest and the Red Sowing are any indication, the team that we have together, we’re gonna pull off a hell of a win with the Battle of the Gullet in the future.”
A release date for the third season of House of the Dragon hasn’t been announced by HBO. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
