Having exceeded every expectation in its debut frame, director Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continued to defy the odds as it entered its second weekend of release. The vampire movie has now passed the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, on the back of an exceptional hold domestically. Starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, Sinners is quickly turning into a Get Out-level cultural event, drawing the attention of not only hardcore horror fans, but also casual moviegoers. The movie is also gaining attention for the unique deal that Coogler struck with Warner Bros.; a deal that will see the film’s rights revert to him in 25 years.

With over $120 million domestically and another $40 million from overseas markets, Sinnerscumulative global haul stands at $161 million after 10 days. Produced on a reported budget of $90 million, the movie needs to gross around $200 million globally in order to break even, at least according to the rule of thumb. But as things stand, it should be able to recover this amount from domestic theaters alone. Sinners opened to near-unanimous praise from both critics and audiences, and appears to have settled at a “certified fresh” 98% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Sinners topped the domestic charts for the second time in a row, despite fresh competition in the form of The Accountant 2, and, rather unexpectedly, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. In its debut frame, the movie out-classed fellow Warner Bros. release A Minecraft Movie, which has now generated nearly $380 million domestically after setting multiple records during its run. W.B. had been having a difficult time in theaters this year before Minecraft came along and changed the narrative — the studio’s Mickey 17 and The Alto Knights had both under-performed.

Coogler Has Catapulted Himself Into the A-List

Sinners was a risky bet as well. It’s been shot on large-format film, and is being presented in select locations equipped to screen it in IMAX 70mm. The film’s success catapults Coogler into the A-list, alongside directors such as Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele, Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg — each of them is capable of delivering original blockbusters, at a time when IP-driven films seem to rule over the marketplace. Also starring Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Miles Caton, and Jack O’Connell, Sinners is playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
