’Snow White’ Falls Asleep at the Global Box Ahead of Final Milestone

If Disney could rub a magic lamp and wish for the year 2025 to begin again, it likely would. The studio will have learned its lessons by now, after having delivered to massive under-performers at the box office. But perhaps there was no saving Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White at all. There was a reason why the two movies were delayed, and it would appear that the concern was warranted. Now firmly at the end of its theatrical run, Snow White is struggling to pass what will be its final global box office milestone. This, too, will be a largely ceremonial achievement, as it has no chance of becoming profitable theatrically.

With $85 million domestically and another $110 million from overseas markets, Snow White’s cumulative global haul stands at $195 million so far. Does it have the $5 million necessary to hit the $200 million mark? Who knows? What’s for certain is the fact that it will not come close to recovering its reported $250 million-plus budget. Either way, the film’s break-even point would likely be around $500 million worldwide, which means that theatrically, it’s going to lose the Mouse House hundreds of millions.

But Snow White will continue generating money through a host of ancillary streams, and will perhaps even turn a profit in a decade or so. It will always be remembered as the movie that almost ended Disney’s streak of live-action remakes after years of success. Things began to show signs of disrepair not too long ago, when Tim Burton’s Dumbo remake under-performed. A few years later, The Little Mermaid barely managed to hold its breath during a tumultuous theatrical run. Like that movie, Snow White also attracted controversy prior to its release.

Leave Rachel Zegler Alone

Most of it seemed to originate from trolls directing hate towards star Rachel Zegler, whose pro-Palestine comments were incorrectly blamed for the movie’s failure. But what about the 40% approval rating that it has received on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes? And what about the fact that movies based on the Snow White fable have never really been successful at the box office. However, there’s something to be said about a bomb of this magnitude, because Snow White has fallen short of even Kristen Stewart’s forgotten Snow White and the Huntsman, which made around twice as much worldwide. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
