A new Miami Vice movie is officially in the works, with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski set to helm the project, according to THR.

What do we know about the new Miami Vice movie?

Alongside Kosinski, the new Miami Vice movie will be written by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), with The Batman producer Dylan Clark attached as a producer alongside Kosinski. It’s unclear exactly what this iteration of Miami Vice will be about, but it will likely involve the underground crime world of Miami and how police handle it.

Currently, no casting news has been made about the project. Release information is also being kept under wraps, so it’s unknown when the project is set to arrive.

Miami Vice originally began as a crime drama TV show that premiered in 1984. The series followed two detectives, James “Sonny” Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), who were Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. The series ran for five seasons, and was critically praised for its uniqueness as a police procedural, where it was inspired heavily by and integrated the 1980s New Wave culture of the time.

The original series was created by Anthony Yerkovich, and executive produced by legendary filmmaker Michael Mann. Mann would later go on to direct his own adaptation of the project in 2006, in a movie that starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Tubbs and Crockett, respectively. That film was not well received upon its release, but has since grown into a cult classic for its stylized look and action sequences.

After directing the massive hit Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski directed 2022’s Spiderhead for Netflix. Next up for the filmmaker is 2025’s F1, which stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, and is set to released on June 27, 2025.
